St. Mary-Corwin to Host Sixth Annual SportsMediPalooza

(PUEBLO, COLO.) St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center will host the sixth annual SportsMediPalooza event on Thursday, June 22 from 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Sangre de Cristo Arts & Conference Center, 210 N. Santa Fe Ave. The free event is geared toward coaches, trainers, athletic directors, school nurses and others with a tie to athletics to offer education, insight, prevention and treatment options for handling sports-related injuries.

The seminar is hosted by Rocky Khosla, MD, a sports medicine and family practice physician, and medical director, Concussion Consultants, Centura Health. With over 30 years experience, Dr. Khosla brings a wealth of knowledge on the topic of sports-related injuries including concussion and sudden cardiac arrest. Other topics include heat related illnesses, safe return to play after an injury, and orthopedic emergencies. Presenters include local athletes and coaches as well as other health care leaders.

A complementary continental breakfast and a boxed lunch will be provided. Participants will also receive certificates illustrating theyve fulfilled the yearly concussion education requirement set forth in the Jake Snakenberg Youth Concussion Act, and also have the opportunity to earn or update CPR/AED certification.

This dynamic event is highly beneficial for our sports community because it provides practical training for coaches and other school personnel on conditions that they should be prepared to handle. said Khosla. I am dedicated to providing tools for individuals to take preventative measures against injuries, but also to share the best information so they can readily identify injuries and take the proper course of action if they do occur.

According to Safe Kids Worldwide, more than 2.6 million children ages 19 and under are seen in emergency departments for injuries related to sports and recreation each year for sports activities such as football, basketball and baseball. Further, studies show that traumatic brain injuries and sudden cardiac arrest are the leading causes of death for young athletes nationwide.
