St. Mary-Corwin Farm Stand Expands to Provide Healthy Options for Community

(PUEBLO, COLO.) St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center is helping to make farm fresh produce and protein accessible to the often underserved Pueblo community with the St. Mary-Corwin Farm Stand. Beginning Saturday, June 24, members of the Pueblo community can enjoy an array of locally grown produce and protein options every Saturday morning through the summer months and early fall. This year, the Farm Stand is bigger and better than ever, joining with additional food partners, offering an expanded variety of foods, and the addition of more organic proteins including free range eggs, cheese and local honey straight from southern Colorado farms.

As the incidence of diabetes and obesity in Pueblo continues to rise, associates and doctors from St. Mary-Corwin recognized a call to action and organized the Farm Stand. Now in its fourth season, individuals can take advantage of the nutritional tools necessary to implement positive changes in diet and exercise, as many might not always have access to such resources. Further, the Bessemer community does not have a supermarket, nor do many individuals have rides to grocery stores.

We recognized the vital need for fresh and healthy foods for those in our community and aim to remind everyone that eating healthy is an easy option, and by bringing fresh produce into the area, everyone can take advantage, said Rev. Linda Stetter, director, mission and spiritual care, St. Mary-Corwin. We are excited to continue to watch the Farm Stand grow and are offering even more options that are both tasty and nutritious and are expanding the ways in which those in our community can take advantage of this resource.

Thanks to partnerships with the Arkansas Valley Organic Growers, a consortium of 16 local, family-owned farms, the Care and Share Food Bank of Pueblo, and the Valley Roots Food Hub, individuals dont have to travel far to the farm or even a store to get healthy and fresh fruits and vegetables. These farmers deliver produce directly from their farms to St. Mary-Corwin each week in preparation for the farm stand, and are able to sell produce at wholesale prices. Also new this year is the addition of SNAP benefits and the Double Up Food Bucks Colorado program. Purchases can be made on a cash-and-carry basis, as credit cards are currently not accepted.

The Farm Stand has taken a new location in the West Lake Avenue parking lot inside the Flight For Life all-weather hangar and guests can enter near the back of the hangar where there is convenient parking directly across from the St. Mary-Corwin health campus. The Farm Stand is open weekly from 8:00 to 10:30 a.m., concluding on Saturday, October 28.
