Child Health & Safety Day 2009

Child Health & Safety Day
Saturday, May 16th

Despite cloudy skies and drizzle, the 2009 Child Health & Safety Day was great success.

An initiative of St. Thomas More Hospital Trauma Services, Child Health & Safety Day is jointly presented by Fremont County First Steps Early Head Start, the Royal Gorge Kiwanis and American Medical Response.  Additionally, dozens of local agencies will participate by sharing their resources to help foster health and safety awareness in children.

Highlighting the event is the distribution of hundreds of free bicycle and skateboarding helmets, made possible through donations to the St. Thomas More Health Foundation. Additionally, a limited number of child car seats and booster seats and rolling back packs were given away.  This years big highlight was the landing of the Flight for Life Helicoptor from St. Mary Corwin Medical Center.

Other participating agencies and individuals include:

·        Canon City Police Department – bicycle safety

·        Canon City Fire Protection District – fire safety

·        Fremont County Search & Rescue – rope bridges & water safety

·        WIC – supplemental nutrition program for women, infants and children

·        D.A.R.E. – drug and alcohol awareness

·        ·        Much more!

Fremont County Early Head Start staffed a Car Seat Safety Check Point to ensure that children’s car seats are properly installed.  Pizzas were delivered by Lil Ceasars and Dominoes Pizza and RE-1 Nutrional services and Meadowgold provided nutritional beverages.

We would like to thank all the organizations and volunteers that helped make this event a success!
